Mapillai Samba, or "Bride Groom Rice," is a native variety of red rice primarily grown in Tamil Nadu. It thrives in organic farming due to its hardiness and minimal need for fertilizers or pesticides. With a growing period of 160 days, Mapillai Samba has nearly vanished from farms and markets, replaced by highly processed, nutritionally inferior white rice. Only a few dedicated traditional farmers continue to cultivate it, notably in Thiruvannamalai.

The name "Mapillai Samba" comes from Tamil folklore. In the past, men demonstrated their bravery through traditional sports, testing both physical and mental strength. One such sport involved lifting a heavy rock, a feat expected of newlywed bridegrooms. To help their sons-in-law succeed, mothers-in-law would serve nutritious foods. Mapillai Samba, known for its high nutritional value, was believed to provide the necessary strength and focus for this challenge, thus earning its name.
